And you never know who might also show up to play with Harpo's son.Ī Jazzy Christmas Eve with Chris Bennett, featuring pianist Bill Marx and friends, 8 p.m., Michael Holmes’ Purple Room in the Trinidad Hotel, 1900 E. It will be great to see them stretch out in a truly melodic jazz show. She’s pairing up with one of Jones’ favorite accompanists, desert charity stalwart Bill Marx, at Michael Holmes’ Purple Club. She now lives in Palm Springs, where she’s becoming more and more involved in the local music scene. SATURDAYĪ jazzy Christmas Eve show: Chris Bennett is a Grammy-nominated jazz singer who I first heard 15 years ago at the Jazz Celebrity Golf and Jam Sessions, where she held her own against such great jazz singers as Tierney Sutton, Ernie Andrews, Mike Costley and Jack Jones. Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, 47900 Portola Ave., Palm Desert. Holiday movies also will play each night in the Village WaTuTu outdoor theater. An artificial snow-filled Whoville will offer guests the chance to have “snowball” fights for a $2 entrance fee. This year’s version features a herd of animal lanterns, including two adult giraffes, one baby giraffe, two zebras and three cheetahs, with one standing 16-feet-tall. The idea of “Wildlights” is to turn the popular zoo and botanical gardens into a “winter wonderland.” A “tunnel of lights” takes you onto a path featuring more than one million colorful, twinkling holiday lights and displays, plus live music by local bands, a 3,300-foot G-scale model train track and, of course, Santa Claus. (760) 365-5956 FRIDAY-SATURDAYįinal weekend: One of the Coachella Valley’s most enduring holiday traditions is the “Wildlights” show at The Living Desert, and this is its final weekend of 2016. The Aggrolites, 9 p.m., Pappy & Harriet's, 53688 Pioneertown Road, Pioneertown. The Pappy’s show could become another great milestone in the self-generating Aggrolites legend. They’ve recorded live at the Belly Up in Solana Beach and the Roxy Theatre In L.A. Jesse Wagner has a great bluesy, Wilson Pickett/Aloe Blacc-type voice and he gets cool support from organist Roger Rivas, plus a bass and drums unit that stays in the pocket no matter where Wagner takes a song. Check out their version of The Beatles’ normally despairing “Don’t Let Me Down,” they turn it into a sing-along. Their publicists call it “liberating rhythms and catchy grooves.”īut it is feel-good music. They call their version of the musical genre “dirty reggae.” It’s a fusion of reggae, soul, grit and (so they say) determination. The Aggrolites are a Los Angeles band, formed in 2002, that describe themselves as a movement more than an act. The Aggrolites are sure to attract quite a few disciples to their arrival at Pappy and Harriet’s. Here come the Aggrolites: Reggae comes in all shapes and iterations today, and the greater desert area has a large audience for its many variations. Yo Younger as Olivia Newton-John, a one-woman tribute, 8 p.m., Pete’s Hideaway in Wendy’s Hideout, 665 S. Drawing people away from their Christmas Eve dinners? That could be a tougher challenge. This role singing Newton-John’s diverse catalog, including Sandra Dee's songs from “Grease,” like “You’re the One That I Want” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” should be a fun challenge. She has a wonderful presence and the strength to enjoy a good challenge. Younger is a Texan who gained her theatre chops at Theatre Three in Dallas. I didn’t know it existed until I recently saw an afternoon show there by The Improvables improv group. Younger’s performance space is called Wendy’s Hideout. Now she’s performing her one-woman tribute to Olivia Newton-John in the back room of a surprisingly remote bar and restaurant next to a car wash on South Palm Canyon Drive called Pete’s Hideaway. I really enjoy sending her messages starting with, “Yo: Yo, …” She loves that. Let’s get physical: I’ve praised the work of Palm Springs-based actress Yo Younger in many local productions, most recently in the Coyote Stageworks production of “Steel Magnolias” with Cathy Rigby subbing for the late Florence Henderson.
